Hannah Hope-Johnson – designer
“Seeing Iris Apfel wearing one of my designs at New York Fashion Week was my biggest break”, says Hannah Hope-Johnson, textile designer behind our latest Designer Edition.
With a degree in Printed Textiles and Surface Pattern Design coupled with an appetite for vivid colour, it’s no wonder Johnson’s vibrant prints are finding themselves on to the runway.
Travel is clearly a passion and a constant theme throughout her work, “I travel a lot! I went to Peru, Bolivia and Paraguay, where I was inspired by the use of natural dyes. In North America I was inspired by street style, as well as the magnificent architecture. This summer I was in Guatemala and Belize where I saw and sketched beautiful wild birds and exotic plants.”
It was on Hope-Johnson’s travels, in fact, that she got the inspiration for her print for her Designer Edition – “I stayed right by this small pineapple plantation in Guatemala this summer, and we were able to pick them and eat them straight away. I wanted to make a print that was exotic and tropical but with cool, relaxing pastel colours and tones.”
A process that combines traditional illustration with computer technology, Hope-Johnson explains “I gather my research and inspiration, start sketching and painting, noting down ideas. I later move onto the computer to refine the tones and shades, I work with pantone colours and play with scale and repeat.”
“My job is what I love to do, it is what I would choose to do anyway, so it doesn’t really feel like a job. Apart from Monday morning emails, that’s not very fun!”
