Chuyên, 29 – frame constructor.
“I’ve been working here for three years, since I left my hometown in the south to come to Saigon. I used to look after baby shrimp in the delta, getting them to grow up big and fat.”
“I’ve gotten pretty quick at putting together the frame for the Mimi – whether it’s the armchairs, sofas, footstools or ottomans. I can make a three-seater frame in just 30 minutes. It’s what I specialise in. The trick is to stay totally focused and move at lightning speed.”
Chuyên pauses for a break and a quick chat, and when he takes off his safety mask it reveals the biggest smile. “I may be quick at this, but I’m much better at football. I play on Sundays with my friends from the workshop and I’m the best. I bet I could play for Vietnam if I tried.”
