Hastaram, 22 – sander.

Hastaram actually means ‘laughing man’. But when we talk to Hastaram, we soon learn he’s a serious character. He laughed when we asked to take his photograph though.

Ottoman, modern-country style artisan

“My friend and my uncle taught me how to sand by hand. I never use machines. Sanding by hand is much better, particularly for hand-carved pieces – machines don’t understand how to protect the detailing. You have to be very aware of what you’re doing with sanding, there’s no going back.”

Hastaram is an expert sander and works on a number of our French– and modern country-style designs, including the Astor ottomans
