Manbhari, 45, woodworker.

She’s dressed beautifully. “My bangles show I’m married. They’re part of the nine symbols of marriage. You’ll see them on any married woman here who honours the traditions.”

“Here, I work with friends. We’re a community that teaches as well as practising our craft. There are a good number of jobs so we never feel threatened. New people are welcomed. I started here four years ago, working on very simple tasks. Now I can sand and finish. I’ve started to do more lacquer work too.”

Manbhari works on our modern country and French designs, like the Aimee bedside tables.
