Shen, Yong Ling, 58 – drawer maker.
“In the past 40 years a lot of things in the world have changed. At the core though, I don’t think I’ve changed very much as a person. I’m still the hard working person I was when I was 18. Work hard – that’s my secret to a good life.”
Yong Ling continues to work while we photograph him. Before long, the drawers of the Rubricks chest of drawers are towering around him. We remark that at this rate he could make a 150 a day. He scoffs. “I make drawers for every piece of furniture that requires them. Most days I make around 200. With small rectangular ones my record is over 300 a day!”
“I’ve been a carpenter for nearly 40 years and I’m familiar with every kind of wood. What type of wood isn’t great? Each one has its own strengths and weakness, so each one is great for different things.”
Yong Ling crafts the drawers for our retro-style Rubricks collection.
