Shayan Ji, senior artisan.

“I’m the most senior artisan here. I have 40 years of experience and I teach everybody who is new; I think of them as my disciples. The ‘Ji’ part is added to my name as a mark of respect.”

“My specialism is sandcasting. I want this art to live on for as long as possible. If I can make more and more disciples, I will have succeeded and I will be happy. If I don’t teach, who will protect it?”

“It is possible to inspire the younger generation. There has to be some natural interest in craft if they want to learn fast though. They need to be sharp.”

Shayan Ji works on the brass plate-and-ring handles used on a number of our French and modern country designs.
